Coming up with a brand or a company name is a process that usually takes a lot of time – especially if you are just starting out and not sure what you are looking for. Would you choose a fun name for your company? Would you choose a professional more solid name? How do you come up with the name in the first place?
It may seem overwhelming at first, but we came up with a list of the top 5 ways used to come up with company name ideas that are simple and easy to follow.
1- Definition is the path to discovery
Before even thinking about your company’s name you need to sit down and start writing what your company is about; what your vision is? What your mission is? What you want your company to represent? Is it a new web design company that is targeting bloggers instead of multinational corporations? Each point you put down on paper will help you define what kind of company you want and therefore what kind of name you are looking for. You’d most likely get a few name ideas – even before you started the name brainstorming process.
2- Show don’t tell
A saying used mostly between writers, surprisingly is applicable here. Your business name doesn’t have to be the literal meaning of your business activity. A restaurant name doesn’t have to be related directly to food. Yet on the other hand you’d need the business name to stand for one of your ideals or at least to show your vision through it. After all the name should relate to something within your company.
3- Never say never; generators can still work out
One of the most underappreciated methods of coming up with names or ideas for names is using name generators. Perhaps most of the time you’ll be using them to get ideas rather than just taking a name generated on face value. But sometimes it just happens and you come across a name that is really good and can be used as is. Sometimes even with a little bit of modification your name is ready.
4- Look, see and borrow
Sometimes it isn’t easy to come up with names out of thin air. The muse is on strike, you have a lot on your plate or perhaps you have to deal with some bills. One of the easiest ways is to borrow ideas. Look at what other people are doing when they are naming their business. Perhaps research some of the names in your current business field or maybe check other fields and how they named theirs. You can get inspiration from other people names that would jump start your own muse. Of course, you don’t want to steal their names or how they named their company but the idea might spark something within your mind that would lead you to yours.
5- Hiring a naming agency
Nowadays there is no shortage in finding a specific business or service provider. Everything can be delegated and naming your company is no different. If you can’t seem to find the right name or perhaps you are stuck coming with something that feels right, why not hire someone else to do it? What used to cost thousands of Dollars now can be done in a few hundred Dollars or less. It definitely would save you the hassle.
